Understanding the Socioeconomic impact through everyday life

I'm Kendeldrick Broaden. I like helping others through technology and scientific research, drawing on economics, psychology and mathematics to identify common routine behaviors and gain insight into human behavior.

Seeking a full-time position on a research team

For the next year, I want to put my data science and mathematics skills to work on a research team.

  • Start: Immediately
  • Location: Austin, TX and surrounding areas
  • Work style: On-site, hybrid, remote or travel
Why research

From working with people to research that helps them

After earning my B.A. at the University of Miami, I worked with adults with disabilities. That experience showed me how much work there is still to do in research, and that I can use my skills as a scientist to help people through research that improves lives over the long term.

Transforming Lives By Transforming Data

Data Analyst, NSF LCCF Internship at the Texas Advanced Computing Center, June 2025 to present. I convert healthcare data from the Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures (A2CPS) study so researchers can use it to predict chronic pain. My internship has been extended three times for exceptional work.

The study

The Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures (A2CPS) project follows 2,800 thoracic and knee surgery patients over 12 months. Participants complete assessments in four groups: patient-reported outcomes, sensory testing (QST), omics and brain imaging (MRI).

Why it matters

According to the CDC, 60 million U.S. adults are affected by chronic pain. High-quality data from A2CPS will provide the biomarkers and biosignatures needed to predict who is susceptible or resilient to developing chronic pain.

My goal

Transform raw healthcare data into clean, validated data through the frictionless pipeline, so future researchers can also convert data between the HEAL and NDA repositories.

Challenges

The pipeline maps origin values to destination values, so every value must match the expected type, with no stray strings or decimals where whole numbers are expected. Missing values and empty rows also caused failures, which the team addressed with data imputation.

The frictionless pipeline
  1. 1ExtractPull one or more forms from the repository into CSV files with extract.py.
  2. 2TransformMap origin values to the HEAL (Helping End Addiction Long-term) format using data dictionaries.
  3. 3ValidateCheck every value against a YAML schema with the frictionless validate function.
  4. 4TransformMap the data again to the NIMH Data Archive (NDA) format, guided by a JSON file.
  5. 5ValidateConfirm the NDA mappings and format with create_nda.py.
  6. 6CommitCommit the validated files to GitHub for team review and collaboration.
Results
  • More than 40 forms converted. The data passed quality control and has been shared with the NIMH Data Archive.
  • Mappings for every form type: common forms, study-specific forms and repeated forms.
  • A path to risk scores. A2CPS biosignatures can be used to develop risk scores for people with chronic pain.
